‘Twas down in yon bower I spent many’s the long hour A-counting each flower by yon clear winding shore It was his stolen kisses proved my fondest wishes He’ll be my greenwood laddie ‘til time is no more Oh, have you seen my dearest, and his eyes shine the clearest His lips like the red blood that’s new dropped in snow He’s neat, tall, and slender, and his hands soft and tender He’ll be my greenwood laddie wherever he goes My parents, my dearest, they treat you with scorn Because you have no riches wrapped up in great store But the more that they slight you, sure the more I’ll invite you To be my greenwood laddie and the one I adore Oh, had I the wealth of the East or West Indies Or had I the gold of the African shore Or could I gain thousands, I would lie by you nightly You’d be my greenwood laddie ‘til time is no more

A gentleman was passing by, he asked for a drink as he got dry At the well below the valley-oh Green grows the lily-oh, right among the bushes-oh Me cup is full up to the brim, if I were to stoop I might fall in At the well below the valley-oh Green grows the lily-oh, right among the bushes-oh If your true love was passing by, you’d fill him a drink as he got dry At the well below the valley-oh Green grows the lily-oh, right among the bushes-oh She swore by grass, she swore by corn that her true love had never been born At the well below the valley-oh Green grows the lily-oh, right among the bushes-oh He said, young maid, you’re swearing wrong, for six fine children you have born At the well below the valley-oh Green grows the lily-oh, right among the bushes-oh If you be a man of noble fame, you’ll tell to me the father of them At the well below the valley-oh Green grows the lily-oh, right among the bushes-oh There’s two of them by your Uncle Dan At the well below the valley-oh Green grows the lily-oh, right among the bushes-oh Another two by your brother John At the well below the valley-oh Green grows the lily-oh, right among the bushes-oh Another two by your father dear At the well below the valley-oh Green grows the lily-oh, right among the bushes-oh If you be a man of noble esteem, you’ll tell to me what did happen to them At the well below the valley-oh Green grows the lily-oh, right among the bushes-oh There’s two buried ‘neath the stable door At the well below the valley-oh Green grows the lily-oh, right among the bushes-oh Another two near the kitchen door At the well below the valley-oh Green grows the lily-oh, right among the bushes-oh Another two buried ‘neath the well At the well below the valley-oh Green grows the lily-oh, right among the bushes-oh If you be a son of noble fame, you’ll tell to me what’ll happen meself At the well below the valley-oh Green grows the lily-oh, right among the bushes-oh You’ll be seven years a-ringing the bell At the well below the valley-oh Green grows the lily-oh, right among the bushes-oh You’ll be seven more a-burning in hell At the well below the valley-oh Green grows the lily-oh, right among the bushes-oh I’ll be seven years a-ringing the bell But the lord about may save me soul from burning in hell At the well below the valley-oh Green grows the lily-oh, right among the bushes-oh

I am a figment of a temporary fancy A singing swan, a child of Lir in flight That must be the reason that still I curse the dawning Will you dance this set with me just for tonight? Step into the ring for just a moment The craic is good and no one here knows my face Identity dissolves within the circle For words that must not be spoken, only vibes replace Kind reverence in a flute so lofty and liquid And rhythm like the beating of a heart Simulates the warning sound of thunder in the distance And when it stops, the pulse is torn apart Oh, heart's delight, this is both curse and blessing I can see it swiftly coming on, too mesmerized to fight Like two golden headlights in the road upon me Hawk's eyes on a paralyzed rabbit in the night Sometimes our ambitions only lead us to confusion There are things we would attain at any cost And when our virtues finally tear us from the clutches of delusion There are tales we leave unspoken, and borders we don't cross They always warned me, be careful what you wish for Not knowing inspiration could do ill And later someone cursed me, may you get just what you wish for If I cannot have a way, I have a will This happens for a cause beyond my knowing Just dance with me tonight and leave your reasoning behind The rhythm underlying stops come morning From then we live forever with our differences in kind

In Connemara 06:11
In Connemara, as I went walking one day I sat on the rocks and I watched the young girls at their play But they spoke in a tongue, it was all so strange unto me For ‘twas Gaelic they spoke as they laughed and played by the sea Ah, but who’s going to hear them, and who’s going to tell them well done And who will rejoice in the Gaelic as our native tongue So beware, little girls, you’re the only white sheep in the fold And the language of England may be yours before you’re too old They tell us forgive and forget, that time is long gone Most of Ireland is our now, most Englishmen in their own home But it’s hard to forget when those pretty voices I hear Speak the language of Erin that’s all so strange to my ear

There was no more path to follow as the rusty sun dissolved into the land But I kept on walking, trying to catch the moon before it got too high Like a piper to a child, it led me deeper on ‘Til it kissed a silhouette against the sky So I joined the sacred circle, and the giant stones stood round me from before I thought I heard a whisper, but the shadows danced too much for me to see I found my hand extending to caress the blue stone cold And my touch unlocked the centuries like a key Chorus: And I was flying, flying through the ages of the stone And I was dancing, dancing to the rhythms of my soul And I was singing, singing for the seeds of life I’d sown And I was praying that the Goddess would renew and make us whole Now I stood in robes of linen, and a fire danced on the faces from before But these were no specters, I knew the words and knew the reasons why I called upon the power, I called upon the land I called upon the winds to purify (Chorus) I awoke on morrow’s morning in a misty shroud obscuring long before Had I just been dreaming, or was I caught up in the magic of the stone As I left them far behind me, I smiled and hummed along With the whispers of the voices I had known (Chorus)

Oh, it’s of a pretty female, as you will understand Her mind being bent on rambling unto some foreign land She dressed herself in men’s attire, or so it did appear And she hired with a sea captain to serve him for a year Now the captain’s wife, she being on board, she seemed in great joy To think her husband had employed such a handsome cabin boy And now and then she’d slip him a kiss, and she would have like to toy But t’was the captain found out the secret of this handsome cabin boy T’was in the Bay of Biscay our gallant ship did plow One night among the sailors was a fearful, flurrying row They tumbled up from their hammocks, their sleep it did destroy And they swore about the groaning of the handsome cabin boy Oh, doctor, oh doctor, this cabin boy did cry Me time has come, I am undone, and surely I will die The doctor he came a-running and a-smiling at the fun For to think a sailor lad should have a daughter or a son Now the sailors when they saw the joke, well, they all did stand and stare This baby belonged to none of them, they solemnly did swear The captain’s wife, she says to him, my dear, I wish you joy ‘Cause it’s either you or me betrayed this handsome cabin boy So each one took his touch of rum and they drank success to trade And likewise to the cabin boy who was neither man nor maid Here’s hoping the wars don’t rise again, our sailors to destroy And here’s hoping for a jolly lot more like the handsome cabin boy!

Up a winding river, and in by Innisvaddy Annie’s got a baby that hasn’t got a daddy And who the baby’s father is, Annie never says But some say it’s Thomas’s, and some say it’s Shay’s Up a winding river, the bonnie wee baby Is fondled and cuddled close by Innisvaddy’s Annie And some say it’s Thomas’s, and some say it’s Shay’s But nobody expected it with Annie’s quiet ways Up a winding river, the country folks are kind And who the baby’s father is, they don’t much mind But oh, the babe at Annie’s breast, the love in Annie’s eye It makes me wish with all my heart the lucky lad was I

Hot Asphalt 03:45
Well, it’s likely gone six months ago since I came to Dublin town To join a gang of laboring men who laid the asphalt down But now I wear a gansey and around me waist a belt I’m a gaffer of the boys who make the hot asphalt Chorus: Well, you may talk about your soldiers and your sailors and the rest Your tailors and your shoemakers who please the ladies best But the devil’s a-one of them has got the greasy hearts to melt Like the boys around the boiler making the hot asphalt Well, one day a copper comes up to me and he says to me, Maguire Would you kindly let me warm myself around your boiling fire? So he turned around to the boiler and upon the edge he knelt And he toppled right into the boiler full of the hot asphalt (Chorus) Well, we quickly pulled him out of it, and we put him in a tub And with soap and lots of heated water we did rub and scrub But a devil a-bit of tar came off, it was stuck on just like stone And every time we gave a rub, you could hear the poor man groan (Chorus) With the boiling and the wetting, he caught as blooming cold And for scientific purposes his body has been sold Inside the National Museum now, he’s hanging by the belt As and example of the dire effects of the hot asphalt (Chorus)
